AP Human Geography
Comparative Religions
Project due January 23rd
This project asks students to produce a summary of evidence
concerning six of the world’s major belief systems. This project will help you develop a good
study resource to review for the AP exam in the spring.
- Prepare an information sheet for Judaism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Include answers to the following questions on each information sheet 70 pts.
- What is the point of origin?
- How did the religion/philosophy spread / type and pattern of diffusion (map)?
- Where is this tradition most influential today? Is the religion hierarchical or autonomous?
- How many followers are there worldwide?
- Is this a monotheistic or polytheistic tradition? Who is/are the main/major deity(ies)?
- Who founded this faith? When?
- What do the followers call their scriptures or holy book(s)?
- How is the religious leadership organized? Is the religion universalizing or ethnic?
- What are the basic beliefs of the religion/philosophy?
- What sects of the religion/philosophy have developed over time?
- Identify ways in which the religion has created a distinctive cultural landscape (images).
- Cultural diffusion is about encounters and interactions among people. Select two of the traditions that you have researched and examine the ways in which these religions have encountered and interacted with each other. Your project should describe the initial encounter, the nature of the interaction and the ways in which the relationship changed over time. Present your ideas in a PowerPoint of no more than 7 slides with at least 6 images and a map of religions current spatial distribution. You may not compare Judaism to Christianity 30 pts.
- Your textbook is useful for general information, but you will need to consult additional resources. Prepare an annotated bibliography citing the sources you consulted for this project. Your bibliography must include reference to one books in addition to your text, one specialized dictionary or encyclopedia, and no more than two websites. The annotation is a brief two or three sentence statement about how you used each source in your research. The 7th slide will be the annotated bibliography.
- Be ready to present on January 23rd. Each student must provide a copy of information sheet of religions and slides to turn in to Mrs. Long.
